Paper-finish and washable kraft: between factory and shelf
25 Oct 2026
Answer first: paper-finish and washable kraft bags fail in transit for a reason that has nothing to do with the paper — humidity. A container crossing two climates is a damp room, and paper at 0.55 mm absorbs it.
What washable kraft actually is
A kraft paper sheet at roughly 0.55 mm with a treatment that makes it resist water and abrasion. It folds like card, sews like a heavy fabric, and takes a crisp deboss. It is not waterproof, and it does not stay flat if it is stored damp.
It is a strong choice for a pouch that has to look sustainable and hold a fold: washable kraft, 0.55 mm.
What humidity does
- Waving. A flat panel takes on a wave across its width after a few days in a humid container, and no amount of pressing at the destination removes it.
- Edge lift. A cut edge that was not sealed delaminates first, then frays. The base seam and the zip end are where it starts.
- Print shift. Paper-finish material printed before transit can haze in humidity, and the haze collects around the fold lines.
What to specify so it arrives flat
- A moisture barrier inside the carton. A polybag per pouch, or a liner bag in the carton. It is the cheapest insurance on the whole order.
- A desiccant pack per carton on sea freight, sized to the carton volume rather than one per order.
- Sealed edges. Ask for the edge finish to be specified, because an unsealed cut edge is the first thing to go.
- No fold through a printed area. Fold on a plain panel, or the print will crack at the crease.
Where paper-finish is the wrong answer
A bag that will sit in a bathroom, a shower caddy or a hotel amenity tray is a humid environment for its whole life, not just its transit. For those, a coated canvas or a laminated non-woven at 80 gsm does the same visual job and does not care about the steam.
Orders start at 3,000 pcs, or 1,000 pcs per colour or size on stocked materials. Send the product’s use environment along with the drawing — humid or dry is a material question, and it is cheaper to answer now than after the first container.
