Hot foil and deboss on thin material: where the logo fails
25 Oct 2026
Answer first: hot foil and deboss both need something underneath them to press against. On a bag that has it, the logo is crisp. On a bag that does not, you get a ghost on the other side, a shine where there should be none, or a logo that rubs off in the box.
What the method needs
- Deboss needs thickness and a backing: 1.2 mm structured PU over a board, or a lined canvas, embosses cleanly. 0.7 mm smooth PU with nothing behind it will show the impression through to the inside face.
- Hot foil needs a surface that accepts the adhesive layer: coated PU usually does, waxed canvas usually does not, because the wax migrates into the foil and it lifts.
- Screen print needs a flat panel and a ink that will flex. It is the cheapest of the three and the least crisp on a grain.
Where it fails on the newer materials
The recycled and plant-based sheets are the ones buyers ask about, and they behave differently from PU:
- Cork debosses and scorches rather than accepting foil — a cork face takes a blind emboss or a stitched patch, not a metallic logo.
- Recycled cotton has slubs, and a fine serif logo disappears into them. Bold the strokes or go up a size.
- Pineapple-leaf and apple-waste sheets emboss unevenly because the fibre density varies across the panel; a deep deboss reads as damage, a shallow one reads as nothing.
The minimum stroke question
Every foil die has a limit: below a certain stroke width the foil cannot release cleanly, and the counters of a small serif fill in. If a brand has one artwork for print and packaging, assume the bag will need a simplified version — and decide that before the die is cut, because a new die is a new cost and a new round.
How to approve it
Foil and deboss are approved on the actual material lot, not on a paper proof and not on a photo. Ask for the logo sample on the production material at production size; a good foil on a swatch that is one shade darker than the bulk lot tells you nothing about the bulk.
Orders start at 3,000 pcs, or 1,000 pcs per colour or size on stocked materials. Send the logo file and the material you have in mind and we will come back with the method that will hold on it.
